Areas of Practice
Michael Mello is a partner in the firm's property trusts and estates practice group and practices primarily in the areas of trusts, wills and estates. He has over 30 years experience and is the author of The Law of Wills & Estates in Bermuda (6th edition) and numerous articles on trusts, wills and estates.
Professional Experience
Mr. Mello was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1972 and has been practicing as a Barrister & Attorney in Bermuda since 1973. Mr. Mello served as corporate legal counsel with Holland Chemical International Limited from 1978 through 1981. He was the founding member of Michael J. Mello, Barrister & Attorney in 1981, subsequently Mello & Jones in 1982 and Mello Hollis Jones & Martin in 1990, now Mello Jones & Martin.
During the Courts' vacation periods, Mr. Mello was an Acting Magistrate from 1975 through 1983, Acting Registrar of the Supreme Court of Bermuda from 1976 through 1994 and Acting Justice of the Supreme Court of Bermuda from 1994 through 2004. Mr. Mello also served as an arbitrator in industrial disputes for the Bermuda Government from 1976 through 1996. Mr. Mello has served on numerous Bermuda Government boards and commissions and presently is chairman of the Price Control Commission.
Bar and Court Admissions
Mr. Mello was admitted to the Bar of England and Wales by the Honourable Society of Gray's Inn, enrolled on the Roll of Barristers of The High Court of Justice, Queen's Bench Division, London, England in 1972 and enrolled as a Barrister and Attorney in the Islands of Bermuda in 1973. He was appointed Justice of the Peace by the Acting Governor of Bermuda in 1987 and appointed Queen's Counsel for the Islands of Bermuda by letters patent issued by the Governor of Bermuda on behalf of Her Majesty The Queen in 1990. Mr. Mello was accepted as a full Member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners in 1999.
