David John Addington, Legal Executive
Areas of Practice
David Addington is a senior legal executive and is responsible for the management and administration of the firm's litigation practice group and all areas of the firm's civil and criminal practice. He has over 40 years of expertise in a broad range of litigation work including common law, equity, insolvency, defamation, landlord and tenant, company commercial and insurance law, criminal law, admiralty and marine cases, family law, arbitration and mediation.
Professional Experience
Prior to joining Mello Jones and Martin in 1994 Mr. Addington was litigation manager for Appleby Spurling & Kempe giving him 30 years experience of Bermudian and international commercial litigation management. In the 10 years prior thereto he had been litigation manager in London, England for Field Fisher Waterhouse (1963-1971); D. Miles Griffiths Piercy & Co. (1971-1973); Rubinstein Nash & Co. (1973-1975); and S. Rutter & Co. (1975-1977).
Professional Activities
Mr. Addington is an assessor for ILEX Paralegal Training Ltd. and a lecturer in law for the Bermuda College. He was the first recipient of the ILEX 2007 President's Award for outstanding service to ILEX and the legal community. He is a former member of the Law Reform Sub Committee on the rules of the Supreme Court of Bermuda and has served on various other law reform committees and is a contributor to professional journals. In 2004 he was appointed a member of the Human Rights Boards of Enquiry. He is well known in Bermuda for his charity and church work having been chairman in 1992 of the Bermuda Zone of the International Association of Lions Clubs and Master of Lodge Civil and Military from 1995 to 1997. His other appointments include or have included Hon. Secretary of the Anglican Church Synod of Bermuda 1996 to 2002; Chairman of the Diocesan Canon Law Revision Committee 2006 to present; past chairman of the board of management of the Bermuda Sailors' Home Inc.; Hon. Chaplain to the Home, the Mission to Seafarers and the Royal Naval Association, Bermuda Branch having been admitted a Clerk in Holy Orders in 2001. His memberships include the Lawyers Christian Fellowship, the Royal Society of St. George, the Royal Order of Scotland and the Mariners' Club.
